The Real Hangar

We are fortunate to live very close to an amazing general aviation airport, the Lincolnton-Lincoln County Regional Airport (KIPJ).  The field has a single paved 5,700′ runway with numerous approaches, self serve fuel, flight school, and maintenance facility.  There are always some great people either working or hanging out on the field to chat with or lend an extra hand (sometimes need an extra hand).

Our hangar is an older T style hangar on the north end of the field facing the runway, which we like to describe as ocean front property.  It’s a great view of the field, faces east to avoid the evening sun, and is a great home for Tess.

While we only rent the hangar, we did do a few upgrades before moving in.  I ordered new LED lights to be installed by our neighbor electrician and had a few extra power receptacles ran for convenience.  I also installed a large fan that moves some hot air around in the summer.  I spent a considerable amount of time finessing the doors to roll better with mixed results, but such is the life of an older hangar.

We outfitted it with most of the equipment from our home shop and even brought the storage cabinets which are now re-missioned for maintenance of the plane instead of parts storage.  Plenty of work bench surfaces are available and a few extra tables come in handy for plane parts or impromptu meals for friends and family.  I also purchased a new 115v air compressor for the smaller jobs now that building is complete.  Most importantly, we have the flags hanging from the ceiling that really make it feel like home.

If the hangar door is open, stop on by and say hi.  But be warned, you may be put to work!
